Certified Nursing Assistant

The certified nursing assistant provides basic resident care under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Such care shall be directed to restoring and maintaining a patient's optimum level of independence, particularly in terms of activities of daily living.

DUTIES

1.Receives reports regarding the status of assigned residents at the beginning of the shift.

2.Gives report to supervising nurse at he end of the shift.

3.Performs direct and indirect resident care activities as ordered and consistent with the facility's policies and procedures. Such activities include, but are not limited too:

• Bathing residents (bed bath, tub, shower)
• Feeding residents
• Toileting residents, (bedpan, urinal, bedside commode, bathroom)
• Performing perineal care
• Assisting residents in grooming (hair care, nail care, foot care)
• Shampooing residents' hair
• Providing oral hygiene and denture care
• Measuring intake and output
• Collecting urine and stool specimens
• Transferring residents from bed, chair wheelchair
• Assisting residents with use of walkers, wheelchairs, canes, braces
• Positioning residents in chairs, beds, wheelchairs, Cadillac chairs
• Turning and changing positions of residents at least every 2 hours
• Lifting residents (manually and with mechanical lifts)
• Performing range of motion exercises (active and passive)
• Assisting with ambulation
• Making occupied and unoccupied beds
• Weighing residents
• Taking vital signs
• Providing post mortem care
• Practicing universal precautions and special isolation techniques
• Monitoring and releasing restraints
• Provides direct care to assigned patients
• Assists patients to establish a basic structure to their day
• Observes patients to establish a basic structure to their day
• Assists in organizing and maintaining cleanliness of patient' personal clothing
• Functions as an assistant to professional staff members in special task groups
• Attends nursing meetings, in-service programs, conferences on the unit
• Performs any other duties that may be required

4. Practices effective communication techniques with residents, visitors, and coworkers

5. Protects residents from complications and injuries.

6.Respects residents' rights.

7.Protects residents from abuse and neglect.

8.Adheres to infection prevention and control procedures.

9.Assists with admissions, transfers, and discharges of residents.

10.Prepares rooms for new admissions.

11.Marks residents' personal possessions; makes inventory of personal possessions.

12.Transports and escorts residents.

13.Documents care as necessary.

14.Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of residents' care plans.

15.Keeps equipment, supplies, and resident furniture clean.

16.Keeps environment clean.

17.Reports to charge nurse:

• Changes in residents' status
• Residents' responses to care
• Equipment and supply needs
• Repair and maintenance needs
• Safety hazards
• Unusual occurrences or observations
• Problems with completion of assignment

18.Directs resident and visitor complaints to charge nurse.

19.Assists physicians and nurses with treatments and procedures.

20.Attends staff development activities to improve knowledge and skills and to maintain competency and certification.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Complete state approved seventy-five (75) hour nurse aide training program, pass test and be certified by State of Michigan
• High school graduation or equivalent preferred, but not required
• Demonstrates mature judgment, emotional stability, and a warm attitude toward a geriatric population.
• Physical condition adequate for performance of work required.
• Must be able to lift at least 50lb.
• Evidence of good grooming and appropriate conduct.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• A willing attitude toward learning and supervision
